Madonna leaves Malawi after failed adoption

Star flies out of African nation after being blocked from adopting second child

Madonna has left Malawi on a private jet almost a week after failing to adopt a second child from the country.

Last week a court in the African nation said residency rules meant the singer was blocked from adopting Chifundo James, whose name translates into English as Mercy.

The child lives is in the same orphanage that was home to David Banda, Madonna's first adopted child.

Madonna's application was rejected because of a requirement that prospective parents be resident in the southern African state for 18 to 24 months.

She said she would appeal the ruling. No date has yet been set for that hearing.
