TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT CONFIRMED

Adam Yauch tells NME.COM that the story we broke over a week ago is true...

TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT CONFIRMED
BEASTIE BOY ADAM YAUCH has confirmed exclusively to NME.COM today (February 16) that his band are planning a UK leg of the TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT this summer - news originally broken by NME.COM on February 7 (Click here to read the story).

The charity and awareness-raising festival took place in Chicago, Tokyo, Amsterdam and Sydney in 1999, but took a year off last year.

However, NME.COM can reveal that the event will definitely be staged on British soil this year - with suggested venues including Battersea in south London and Castle Donington and taking place on either June 23-24, the weekend Glastonbury was due to be held, or another weekend during September.

Acts including the likes of Radiohead and REM look likely to play, although Yauch refused to confirm names.

Speaking to NME.COM in London, where he is in the process of talking to promoters and bands regarding the event, he said working towards the show was "pretty much a full-time job". He went on: "I doubt anything will happen as soon as June. We're here researching the possibility of doing a Tibetan Freedom Concert. We're looking at possible venues, possible dates and meeting with promoters and different people and feeling it out - we're really figuring out if it can be done."

Explaining the break in 2000 following the four 1999 shows he added:
"We were doing it every year and we thought it was maybe losing some of the importance or impact. It was becoming a regular thing. We thought that doing it in other places also would be important so we started looking into the idea of doing it here in the UK."

He made it clear, though, that events on the scale of 1999 - when the four shows happened at the same time around the globe - were unlikely to be repeated.

"We're not going to try and do a number of concerts again simultaneously. The thing we learned from doing that was that trying to do a bunch of them at the same time in different places made it hard to give them your full attention, So we're likely to do a number of them at different times. We're talking about doing one in Japan also."

As regards new Beastie Boys material, Yauch was reluctant to confirm when any would appear.

"The band's on vacation right now. I'm not sure exactly when another Beastie Boys record will come. Some day, sometime," he said.

For more details and further news on the event see next week's NME, in shops in London on Tuesday, February 20 and a day later throughout the UK.
