The group had been working on a new album for much of the last year. Last time NME.COM spoke to frontman Paul Draper was in May 2002, when he said Mansun had almost completed 15 new songs.

However the group have "called it a day" after realising "the life of the group had come to an end".

A spokesman for the band said: "After nearly eight years together, they decided that Mansun had run its course and it is time to do other things."

Guitarist Dominic Chad added: "(There's) nothing sinister behind it, it was completely amicable. We all just want to be able to do other things."

The band scored a UK Number one album in 1997 with their debut effort 'The Attack Of The Grey Lantern'.
