Marilyn Manson has insisted that he wants to challenge people with his new album.

The notorious shock-rocker releases new LP 'Born Villain' on May 1 in the US and April 30 in the UK and, in an interview with Loudwire, said he knew people "won't give a shit" about the record unless it was confrontational.

He said:
If everything is happy, then who gives or a shit, or if it's just a straight line, I won't give a shit either. If it's down, which is sometimes where I was more often than up, it's not inspiring. So I just wanted to make something that would make people feel something.

He went on to add: "I was playing it to people that were my friends. Some of them never heard my music before, never liked my music, whatever the situation was, but it's a challenge and I love a challenge. I had forgotten how much I love a challenge."

Comparing the album to the band's more recent efforts, meanwhile, he explained: ''I feel like I did get to a point on my previous two records – not that I'm discrediting the music that I did or hating it or anything of that nature – I just feel that I started to change the way I wrote because I wanted to open up. Sometimes you don't know how the fuck to be yourself.''

Earlier this month (April 4), Manson unveiled the controversial video for new track 'No Reflection'. The promo features Manson himself at a dinner party surrounded by female guests. Halfway through the video, things turn nasty when the guests realise their drinks have been spiked and they then begin vomiting blood. Ultimately, they all end up dead at the video's climax.

The record is the follow-up to Manson's 2009 album 'The High End Of Low', which was their last for longtime record label Interscope Records. They have since signed a new deal with Cooking Vinyl, who will put out 'Born Villain'.
