Mary J. Blige has signed up to star as the lead in a film based on Nina Simone's life.

The singer is set to start filming for Cynthia Mort's movie, 'Nina', later this autumn.

Mort's script focuses on Simone's relationship with her assistant Clifton Henderson, who will be played by The Last King Of Scotland star David Oyelowo, reports Billboard.com.

Simone, who is perhaps best known for her hit single 'Feeling Good', which Muse covered on their 2001 album 'Origin Of Symmetry', was a singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and civil rights activist.

She died at the age of 70 in 2003 after a long illness.
