Melissa Etheridge takes home Oscar for best song
Melissa Etheridge took home the Oscar for Best Song at the 79th Academy Awards held at the Los Angeles Kodak Theatre tonight (February 25).

The American singer-songwriter penned 'I Need To Wake Up' for the film 'An Inconvenient Truth' -- a documentary chronicling Al Gore's campaign to warn the world about global warming.

"This feels as good as you think it does," Etheridge told the star-studded audience when accepting her award.

"I have to thank Al Gore for inspiring me, showing me that caring about the earth is not Republican or Democrat, it's not red or blue. We are all green. We can be the generation that woke up and did something."

Etheridge performed the song during the ceremony, as did other best song nominees including Randy Newman who performed 'Our Town' with James Taylor, and 'Dreamgirls' co-stars Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose who sang a medley of three nominated songs from the film.

'An Inconvenient Truth' also won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Etheridge beat out competition from:

'Patience' -- Music by Henry Krieger; lyrics by Willie Reale, from the film 'Dreamgirls'.

'Our Town' -- Music and lyrics by Randy Newman, from the film 'Cars'.

'Love You I Do' -- Music by Henry Krieger; lyrics by Siedah Garrett, from the film 'Dreamgirls'.

'Listen' -- Music by Henry Krieger and Scott Cutler; lyrics by Anne Preven, from the film 'Dreamgirls'.
