Metallica explain the meaning of their new album's title

'Death Magnetic' is a tribute to dead rock 'n' rollers

Metallica have explained the meaning behind their new album title 'Death Magnetic'.

As reported yesterday, the band have already decided on the record's tracklisting but now frontman James Hetfield has explained his reasoning behind the naming of the record.

Hetfield said: "It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like [Alice In Chains frontman] Layne Staley and a lot of the people that have died, basically - rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there."

He continued: "Thinking about death...just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away."

Hetfield explained most people are uncomfortable with the subject of death.

He said: "The concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about - no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point."

Metallica release the follow-up to 2003's 'St Anger' on September 22.

Ignorant. How can you say no one cares about what they have to say, record or think? They are right behind the beatles in album sales and are a house hold name! One of the biggest bands of all time!

Yeah James Hetfield is a moron. He is only the principal writer of some of the most influential metal ever and has helped write one of the best metal albums of all time (Master)... he is for sure the idiot. If you don't understand a simple album description that is you being stupid. And as for complaining about the album being about "Is he refereeing to some smack head or coke head who put too much shit in themselves?" it sucks they took their lives that way, but many weren't strong enough to seek help. It's a true in the industry, not condoning it, just accepting of it. Relax you like pansy. If you have nothing interesting to say, don't waste your fucking time and post on message boards for a band you don't like. Get a life

Well HEROOFTHEDAY316........ha ha. "The principal writer of some of the....." blah blah. Used to like Metallica.....when I was a child. The point I'm trying to make is that yes, it is a very simple explanation of the title of their album, understand it fully, just happen to think that it's pseudo-intellectual bullshit from one of the biggest egotists to ever grace the metal scene who seems to assume that we all wait with baited breath on his next utterings! That's all. If you don't like it I couldn't care less. Metallica seem to cater to a bunch of pituary retards who seem to think that banging their brains against the inside of their skulls shows how much they're into the music. Take your badly designed t-shirts, excruciatingly bad (and simple) lyrics and jump. When you judge artistic merit by commercial success then art has lost. Please "get a life" yourself and try and understand that some of us are bored of listening to whining little fanboys like yourself and like to judge things on merit rather than who said them. Please feel free, if you have anything to say in response to this, to keep it to yourself. And as much as you're entitled to dash to Mr Hetfields defence in response to my first comments I'm allowed to tell you I think their music sucks, challenges anybody with an average IQ in no way whatsoever and belongs in the darkest of dark places...........which will probably appeal to you. Enjoy grunting and scrabbling around forest floors. Oh, and by the way, "Relax you like pansy" isn't actually a sentence!
