Metallica's ninth studio album has taken the top spot on the US Billboard chart after hitting Number One in the UK earlier this week.

'Death Magnetic' - the veteran rockers' first album in five years - sold 490,000 in just three days' time, reports Reuters.

In addition to being available in shops and online, the album was sold via non-traditional outlets including a concert/ticket album package from Ticketmaster, through the 'Guitar Hero' video game, and together with Metallica-branded headphones.

Meanwhile, you can check out our gallery of images from Metallica's O2 Arena gig in London this week, plus check out our NME.COM's 25 things you didn't know about Metallica picture gallery now.
