Metallica closed the inaugural Sonisphere festival at Knebworth last night (August 2) with a two-hour set featuring fire and pyrotechnics.

The group's followed the new UK festival's opening day, which saw Linkin Park headline.

James Hetfield and the band played a mixture of tracks from recent album 'Death Magnetic' plus older hits including 'One', 'Master Of Puppets' and 'Sad But True'.

"Do you want heavy?" Hetfield asked the crowd before playing the latter song – and was met with roars of approval before the band ended their set with 'Seek And Destroy'.

Metallica played:

'Blackened'
'Creeping Death'
'Fuel'
'Of Wolf And Man'
'Fade To Black'
'Broken, Beat And Scarred'
'Cyanide'
'Sad But True'
'One'
'All Nightmare Long'
'The Day That Never Comes'
'Master Of Puppets'
'Dyers Eve'
'Nothing Else Matters'
'Enter Sandman'
'Stone Cold Crazy'
'Hit The Lights'
'Seek And Destroy'

Earlier Nine Inch Nails played what is expected to be their final UK performance, after announcing their withdrawal from the live arena, while Machine Head saw their Main Stage slot was temporarily cancelled, after the band had already been moved down the bill to make room for Limp Bizkit.

However, the Bay Area thrash band did eventually show up to play in the end, with frontman Robb Flynn explaining: "When the promoters begged us to come and play we realised we had to do it for the fans. It's an honour to play for you guys. We're so fucking lucky to have a fanbase this huge."

He followed the explanation up with a heckle aimed at Limp Bizkit during the intro to 'Old'. "It's not about the 'Nookie', it's about the rage," he said, referencing the song by Fred Durst's band.

Durst didn't seem too affected by the diss when his band eventually took to the Main Stage, and even paid tribute to Machine Head.

"Lets hear it for Machine Head," he declared from the stage during his band's show. "One thing about those guys: they don't give a fuck and their shit is harder than a motherfucker. So fuck you."
