Metallica's Lars Ulrich has admitted that the band will have to relearn songs from their self-titled fifth album – widely known as 'The Black Album' – for their headline slot at next summer's Download Festival.

It was announced last week that the metal legends would top the bill at the Donington Park bash in 2012 and will play their 1991 LP in its entirety. In an interview with Kerrang!, the drummer confessed that he and his bandmates would have to remember how to play their old material for the gig – including two tracks that they've never played live before.

Talking about why they chose to play 'The Black Album' at the festival, he said: "The people at Download asked. It wasn't our idea. The thing is, although we haven't played at Donington for six years, we have been to England pretty much every summer since then. So they wanted us to do something different, and that's what they came up with."

He then confirmed that the band would be playing the album tracks 'Don't Tread On Me' and 'The Struggle Within' live for the first time and admitted they would need to learn how to play them again, adding:

Although to be honest with you, a song like 'The Struggle Within' is a lot easier to relearn than 'The Frayed Ends Of Sanity' [from their '…And Justice For All' LP]. I don't think it's going to be too difficult for us to figure out these songs.

Download Festival will take place from June 8-10 2012 at Donington Park, with tickets going onsale a week on Friday (November 18).

The festival was headlined by System Of A Down, Linkin Park and Def Leppard in 2011 and also featured sets from Bullet For My Valentine, Rob Zombie, Pendulum, Bring Me The Horizon as well as the comeback show from The Darkness.

See Downloadfestival.com for more information about the festival.

Tickets for next summer's Donington festival went onsale today (November 19) at 9am. To check the availability of Download Festival 2012 tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0871 230 1094.
