Metallica have confirmed that they are set to play a gig in Antarctica.

The metal band's performance will take place inside a dome at the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on December 8 and the audio will be transmitted to the crowd through headphones. The audience will be made up of competition winning fans from Latin America, who will travel on an Antarctic cruise from December 3-10, stopping at Carlini for the gig. It will be the second ever gig staged on the continent, following a performance in 2007 from a group of musical scientists, called Nunatak, at British Antarctic Survey's Rothera Research Station as part of the Live Earth climate change awareness concerts.

Writing at Metallica.com, the band said: "We'll be playing inside a dome on the base and in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification... a real first for us! The show will also be streamed live for our friends in those Latin American countries who cannot join us at the base and filmed to share with everyone at a later date."

The concert is being put on in conjunction with Coca Cola Zero, who are running the competition for tickets, which you can enter if you live in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica or Mexico. The contest opens on October 28, when you will be able to click here for more information.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently said the band would love to play Glastonbury, saying they are "ready to go" as and when organiser Michael Eavis needs them. The US band have never played at Worthy Farm before but, with no headliners yet revealed for the 2014 bash, Ulrich has suggested Metallica could play. Speaking to MTV, the drummer revealed that he worries that the chances of seeing the band headline the Pyramid Stage are decreasing but he remains keen to perform.

"Every year there's probably less chance of us doing it than the previous year, but it just looks like it would be a fun night out," said Ulrich. He adds: "We've been fortunate enough to play every other festival on this planet numerous times, so Glastonbury is the only one that's eluding us."
