Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has said that the band are "deep into the songwriting" of their new album.

The metal giants released their last album, 'Death Magnetic', in 2008. Ulrich told Rolling Stone that they are now fully focused on their next record. "We're going through the grind," he commented. "We're in there doing riffs and putting them into songs. We don't really write one song and then show up the next day and do another one. We just work on riffs and sections, connecting riffs and tempos and moods."

He added that they've been working on the record "off and on" for almost a year and will reconvene in the studio at the start of May. "We're going to start talking about who is going to produce the album. We haven't started recording yet. But we are deep into the songwriting part of it."

Bookmakers Paddy Power have made Metallica joint favourites with Prince to headline the Saturday night of Glastonbury Festival. Speculation has been mounting that the metal veterans will headline the Pyramid Stage on June 28, after Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis said that long-time favourite Prince "wasn't happening this year".

The band have been confirmed to head up Sonisphere Festival on July 6 in Knebworth. To check the availability of Sonisphere tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0844 858 6765
