Metallica frontman James Hetfield has confirmed that the band are recording a new album.

The thrash metal group released their last LP 'Death Magnetic' in 2008, with guitarist Kirk Hammett recently commenting on the difficulty in getting the band all in the same room.

Now speaking in a video interview about guitars, Hetfield said: "I tell ya, we’re recording right now, and there’s the number one guitar, there’s the number two guitar, there’s the number three. And the third-track guitars that just sound different. They all sound different".

Kirk Hammett had previously said the band are 25-30% of the way to completing the album as early as April this year.

"I don't think we hit the middle point yet. I would say we're at the 25 per cent point, maybe 30 per cent point. It's hard to say, but I mean we are working on it and there are songs and we're making plans to write more songs and record," Hammet said at the time.

Metallica also launched a limited edition can of Budweiser beer. The black beer cans emblazoned with the Metallica logo are being sold at the band's live shows.
