Metric have shared a new song, titled 'The Fatal Gift'.

Click below to listen to the track, which the band's frontwoman Emily Haines says is 'unfinished'. Writing on the band's official blog, Haines said: "It's unfinished but I like it enough the way it is to play it for you now. The question is, did I accidentally write a dark Christmas carol last summer? Looks like we're about to find out."

In the Christmas Day post, Haines added that the band were in the studio working on more new material. "Here I am, writing this letter to you from the studio, fully immersed in fresh music and somewhat amazed that we’ve managed to keep on loving what we do for this long," she said.

Metric released their fifth album, 'Synthetica', in 2012. The late Lou Reed - who passed away in 2013 - appeared on an album track called 'The Wanderlust', singing backing vocals. Singer Emily Haines told NME that she first became friendly with The Velvet Underground man when he quoted lyrics from the Metric song 'Gimme Sympathy' at her.

Haines said: "We had this bit in 'The Wanderlust' which needed a back-up and I thought he'd be perfect, so I called him up and he said yes right away. He's one of the finest songwriters ever and to have him on our record is a huge honour."
