Thousands of fans were turned away from a free MGMT show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn yesterday after many queued for several hours to gain entry.
The show was one of the most popular in the free JellyNYC Sunday series of events at the giant empty outdoor swimming pool, which was almost at capacity for openers The Ting Tings whose high- energy performance posed strong competition for the headliners.
Making their way through a short but sweet set, The Ting Tings saved the best for last when they invited a jump rope squad from Brooklyn onstage for ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’.
Despite the forecast heavy storms, the rain and thunder held off for the remainder of the evening with MGMT taking to the stage at 5.45 pm following a set from Black Moth Super Rainbow.
Opening with ‘Of Moons, Birds & Monsters’, MGMT played a rousing set for their hometown crowd, including ‘Time To Pretend’, ‘Pieces Of What’, ‘Electric Feel’ and ‘The Youth’.
The duo drew a star-studded cast to the show, with Kirsten Dunst, Agyness Deyn, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos and Sean Lennon spotted hanging out.
“This is a great venue, It’s the last summer of shows here, right? It’s sad. In honour of that we’re going to play you a 14-minute song” Ben Goldwasser told the crowd before launching into ‘Metanoia’, followed by final track ‘Kids’.
MGMT played:
‘Of Moons, Birds & Monsters’
‘Weekend Wars’
‘The Youth’
‘Future Reflections’
‘4th Dimensional Transition’
‘Pieces Of What’
‘Electric Feel’
‘The Handshake’
‘Time To Pretend’
‘Metanoia’
‘Kids’
The free JellyNYC Sunday shows at McCarren Pool continue this week (August 3) with The Black Lips, Deerhunter, King Kahn & His Shrines and Tall Firs.
