Singer performs track from recently released LP 'Matangi'


MIA performed on US TV chat show Conan earlier this week – scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to watch.

MIA was on the programme to perform a rendition of her track ‘YALA’, which features on her recently released LP ‘Matangi’, which came out on November 4. Other tracks on the LP include ‘Bad Girls’, ‘Come Walk With Me’ and ‘Exodus’ featuring The Weeknd.

MIA appears on the cover of this week’s NME, available digitally and on newsstands now. In the interview, she discusses the inspiration behind ‘Matangi’ and also touches on other subjects including her relationship with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who she describes as “one of the smartest people I know.”

Talking about Assange, who is living inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces allegations of sexual assault, MIA says: “That’s kind of how they get you these days. It’s your character. They don’t actually assassinate you like they used to in the ’70s. It’s not necessary these days.”

Assange himself contributes a quote to the interview. Asked how he would describe his friend MIA, he replies via email, to say: “She’s the world’s loudest and finest rapping and dancing megaphone for the truth.”

Earlier in 2013, the singer accused a New York court of a human rights violation for a ruling which said she could not bring her child back to the UK until a custody battle with her ex-boyfriend was resolved.
