The Specials' Jerry Dammers praises Michael Jackson
However the founding member is critical of Jarvis Cocker's 1996 Jackson stage invasion
The Specials' Jerry Dammers has paid tribute to Michael Jackson, who died yesterday (June 25).
The estranged member of the Coventry band made a point of praising Jackson’s abilities as a singer.
"The thing that sometimes seems to get overlooked about Michael Jackson is what an absolutely phenomenal singer he was,” noted Dammers. “He had one of the greatest gospel shouts of the 20th century, quite possibly the last of its kind.”
He also criticized Jarvis Cocker, who invade the stage during Jackson’s performance of ’Earth Song’ at the 1996 Brit Awards after finding the set-up distasteful.
“The outros of some of his songs especially, such as ’Wanna Be Starting Somethin'’, were ecstatic, and, or, full of pain, like the one about the environment, which Jarvis Cocker attacked him for,” added Dammers. “I like Jarvis, but I personally didn’t really understand the reason for that. "
