Arctic Monkeys' mates announce farewell gig

Milburn have announced they are to split, ending months of speculation about the Sheffield band's future.

In a statement posted on their Milburnmusic.com, the band claim that there has been "no falling out" and that they remain "friends and supporters of each other".

"Not everyone in the music media understood us but you the fans did, and over the last two to three years we’ve shared some amazing experiences that we’ll never forget and we feel very privileged to have done so," the statement explained.

"We want to sincerely thank every one of you that supported us along the way. It's been overwhelming."

The band plan to release two new songs - 'The District Line' and 'Stay At Home' - and play a farewell gig at Sheffield Academy on May 24.

Although it appears to have been on the cards for a while now, it seems a little ironic that NME release this story (late), when it is in fact the NME that slammed Milburns album "Well, Well, Well".I saw the band several times and they were a class above most other "indie" bands at the time.

people assuming milburn live under the wing of arctic monkeys, everything they did somehow always reffered back to the same point........ rubbish. They were a band built on there own morals and experience, defining my generation if not everyone elses. they may have been underdogs and any real fan of "propper" music will be absolutely gutted.i will be attending the show to say farewell.. only to welcome them into my memory.RIP Milburn. (cheers lads)

Agree with both the posters above me.A fantastic band wo deserved much more credit than the NME gave them. The fans knew how good they really were and thats all that matters at the end of the day!

not that i was a huge fan,but for too long NME you rubbished them and the fanbase and hype was never going to build on that basis.I'm not saying that NME is the be all or end all but It is a highly praised magazine for it's views and when you slate a band, the public aren't going to take to them. The same thing happened with the harrisons,in that they themselves believe they are good but when magazines like NME don't agree they aren't going to get anywhere.Shame really.

Glad to see other people agreeing. Milburn had talent and had some good songs that with the right guidance and direction could have been huge. Instead magazines such has NME slammed them as Arctic Monkeys wanna-be's. It was really unfair on them, and my view of the NME has never been the same since.Even in an article about Milburn the writer feels it necessary to include the Arctic Monkeys. Fact is Milburn were doomed to fail from the moment everyone jumped on the Arctic band wagon. Any songs that sounded similar or had a similar style (despite acutally being better and wrote first) were slammed has copies. The NME once dedicated their front cover to Nu-Yorkshire and praised the music coming from Leeds, Sheffield and surrounding areas. Contributing to where the Arctics, Kaiser Chiefs, Cribs and the Pigeons are now. But they left Milburn behind and in my opinion started the dowfall.Heres to Milburn, the Academy gig is going to be absolutely amazing."It's closing time and it's getting lateCan you fetch my coat cause I don't feel too great... anymoreBut I want to stayDon't you want to stay as well?I don't think that you doI've got this funny feeling that you don't feel like I doThis conversation's just passing you byI know it, I can see it in your eyes"

I agree with all of the above. Its a massive shame that Milburn have decided to split. NME were stupid to slag them off so much, and for no good reason too. They were a great band and deserved miles more respect. The most ridiculous thing people said about them is that they copied off Arctic Monkeys, when in reality it was more like the other way round! Best of luck in whatever your future plans are lads.

What a shame.. top band, with a top fanbase.. always left a milburn gig smiling... Milburn wrote some amazing songs, which you could listen to, dance to, without wearing skinny jeans, or straightening your hair. Real music for real fans.. not nme hacks, and plastic scenesters.. will be sorely missed.

NME hang your head in shame.. you have only ever contributed to this sad day in yorkshire music... over the past few years you have only ever criticised milburn for jumping on the arctic monkeys band wagon and sounding to much like them.the facts don't lie... milburn formed well before arctic monkeys ever arrived.. The stumbling block was the delay in releasing there debut album 'well well well' (which nme criticised).. i firmly believe if milburn had released there album prior to the the arctic monkeys debut.. we wouldnt of reached this sad day..in yorkshire music! This is an example of how powerful NME is.. people read what you write and believe you.. whether it is correct or not.. Milburn are a victim of your comparisions and criticisms!!Joe Carnall is a talent musician and amazing song writer.. i hope this isnt the last material i hear from him.Milburn forever!!!

I love it how all the fans come out now they've split up. At the end of the day, Milburn were alright. You can go on about how arctic Monkeys copied off Milburn but the fact is arctic monkeys r just better. No ones gunna really miss Milburn that much and it wont affect the British scene in any way. It's just one less middle-of-the-road indie band. Well done tho

Some people dont know what theyr talking about. Like the person above who've jumped on the band wagon. Dont know bowt every1 else but I've been to quite a few Milburn gigs and they were awesome- some of the best gigs I've ever been to. Anyone who thinks Milburn copied AM are dilusional, fact is Milburn were around before AM so if anyone copied anyone it was AM. The only thing that sounds similar between the two bands is the lead singer and course theyr gonna theyr both from Sheffield theyv got Sheff accents? And NME should be ashamed of slating Milburn, they only ever tried to make good music and they definately succeeded, no matter what anyone says.

Eurgh, I Don't Think You Understand How Painfull It Was Signing Up With This, Cause All NME Do Is Slate Milburn. All They Wanted To Do Was Make Music, Why Did People Have To Make That Hard For Them? They Loved What They Were Doing And Man Were They Good At It. I Can't Believe You Actually Think People Care About Your Opinion, Cause All It Ever Is Is, Artic Monkeys This , Artic Monkeys That. Pull Your Tongue Out Of Their Arses. There's No Need To Wonder That If It Was The Other Way Around, You Would Have Been Milburns Number One Fan, Cause This Isn't A Case Of Whos Better, For You Its Whos The Most Famous, And To Be Honest Its Just Shallow. Why Couldn't You Have Just Given Them A Chance? So My Advice Is Pull Your Straws Out Of Alex Turners Arse Before You Let Even More Talent Pass By You. Both Milburns Album Are On My Ipod And I Assure You They Will Always Be There Despite What You Say. I Don't Care If They've Spilt, The Music Will Always Be Worth Listening To Its Just A Shame You're So Ignorant To Notice.

The two comments above sum up eveything i have to say to be honest. The way NME treated Milburn was pathetic, giving them no chance whatsoever to suceed in the music market. Why be so biased and be up Mr Turner arse as if he is some like god? Yeah AM are good, but so are milburn! The truth being milburn are bound to sound like AM due to both singers having distinctive sheff accents, but so what? If their music is great, which it is, why just put shut on them? And never give them a chance? I also find it so spineless, that you at NME slate them in your magazine, however you have put them on your 'essential bands' album for the past 2 years? It just doesnt add up. Milburn, are and always will be my favourite band of all time, growing up listening to their songs was amazing. Their live reputation was envied by many bands, they still and always will remian 'the most underrated band ever!' .

Was absolutely gutted when I saw this, they've got to be the most underrated band ever!!! Well, Well, Well is one of my most played albums and songs like Cheshire Cat Smile and What You Could've Won just highlight how much talent these guys have. What I dont understand is how pathetic bands like Nickelback manage to be so succesful and yet bands like Milburn who have such genuine talent struggle to make any breaks. Biggest regret for me is that i'll never get to see them live!!! Best of luck in the future lads whatever you end up doing and cheers for two class albums.

I think the milburn spoke for themselves last night at glasgow ABC2. unbelievable gig, dont think ANYBODY in that venue wasnt in awe, especially when the crowd rushed the stage at the end, tremendous!!! I, and the other 349 fans in the venue, gave Milburn a resounding farewell with the chantYOU CAN SHOVE YOUR NME UP YOUR ARSEYOU CAN SHOVE YOUR NME UP YOUR ARSEYOU CAN SHOVE YOUR NMESHOVE YOUR NMESHOVE YOUR NME UP YOUR ARSE!!with which Joe, got on the mic and sarcastically quipped " we arnt bitter"
