Twitter to launch music service this month?

Twitter is reportedly readying the launch of a new music app.

The social networking company reportedly bought music sharing service We Are Hunted last year and is using its technology to build its own standalone music app, which could be launched by the end of this month (March 2013).

According to CNET, the new app, to be called Twitter Music, suggests artists and songs personalised to suit which accounts a user follows on Twitter. Those tracks will then be streamed to the user via SoundCloud.

The Twitter Music app will reportedly have four main tabs to help the user search for music. Along with the 'Suggested' tab, which picks artists from who the user follows, the app will have 'Popular' and 'Emerging' tabs as well as utilizing a hashtag (#nowplaying) to see what tracks other users are listening to.

Twitter Music has been touted as a new competitor to steaming sites like Pandora and Spotify, and arrives in the wake of Facebook overhauling the music section of their News Feed.

The move comes not long after Twitter launched its Vine video app last year. However, unlike the video sharing site, Twitter Music will keep the original branding from the social networking site. The company already has the @Twittermusic account set up, which currently has over two million followers.

Twitter is yet to confirm the official launch of Twitter Music.
