Moby gives his music away free to filmmakers

Independent films can use his tunes for free

Moby has offered his music free to filmmakers for use in independent films.

The New York based artist is offering tracks for free on mobygratis.com to independent and student filmmakers, and asks for a small charity donation if the films get distribution deals.

Several of the tracks are from his multi-million selling 1999 album ‘Play’, and there’s a selection of unreleased songs, as well as three from his 2002 album ‘18’.

Moby says he started the service in response to complaints from his friends in the film industry who find it difficult to get permission from record labels to use music for a reasonable rate.

He also says he has set it up so that he can never make any money from the venture.

Meanwhile, he’s gearing up for the release of his new album, slated to hit shelves in March 2008.
