Scottish band slag off Damon Albarn and co once more

Mogwai have re-opened their feud with Blur following the news that Damon Albarn and co have reformed and will play two gigs at London's Hyde Park next year.

In 1999, the Mogwai baited Blur by selling t-shirts with the slogan 'Blur: Are Shite' adorned on them. The band went on to claim that '78 percent of people agree that Blur are shite'. Blur refused to be drawn into a war of words.

Now, following the band's reformation, they have re-opened their slanging session, by writing a blog on their website, Mogwai.co.uk.

"Anyone fancy a 'Blur: Are Shite Once Again' T-Shirt?" the blog read. "It seeeeeems as if the seminal britpop band called Blur want to get back together again to make astounding new music.

"This could have catastrophic effects on our youth and middle-aged citizens. As the world's 4th biggest economy, Blur's surprise reunion could have destabilizing ramifications which are too legion to be properly explained here.

"Only Patrick David Xavier McMeneman-McHanarahan, our specialist reunion specialist, can even start to describe the disastrous potency of this formative party's regrouping on the world's already dangerous pre-apocalyptic position.

"He says, 'Their imperial designs know no bounds and we will have to use all of our vigor and guile to disperse this potential doomsday-making scenario else we sprint toward a life-ending britalocalypse.'

"He added: 'Damon Albarn: Taller than a Chinese tree; Graham Coxon: Not a bumblebee; Dave Rowntree: Diddy Doo Diddly Doo Labour loser Doo Diddly Doo; Alex James: Cheese master in more ways than one.'"

Who the fuc# are Mogwai!!!? - I'm not just saying that for effect.... Seriously.... Who the fuc# are they??? - Obviously trying to get themselves known with comments like this. It would be like me asking Joe Calzaghe for a fight!!

Mogwai are a pretty shite band. I'm surprised they have so much beef with a band that are clearly more talented and able to diversify their music. I'm guessing they are slightly jealous that a band who sound like they don't have as much scope as Mogwai (but clearly do and much more diversity) are so popular!!Long live Blur and fuck Mogwai. Scottish morons!

I have to say I think Damon Albarn is a pr*ck but I respect him as an artist. Mogwai seriously need to get over themselves instead of indulging in this sub-gallagher nonsense.

Mogwai? Who?

Dec 12, 2008

Yeah. Funny. Only, no-one really cares about Mogwai these days, yet Blur...............

Dec 12, 2008

What a petty band 'Mogwai' are, using there own merchandise to put Blur down. For god sake, get over it. Blur are bigger and better then your shitty little band, move on..... Blur have taken the high road and arn't wasting their time with these twats. Good job lads.

Let me start by saying I consider both of these bands to be phenomenal! But am I the only one that thinks this incredibly dumb on Mogwai's part? They just sound like assholes. It was funny the first time, but now it just seems desperate and immature. I mean how old are these guys? For a band that makes music that sounds like it was made by a machine (not a bad thing, but ironic), they sure are some pretty silly human beings. Blur are an excellent group. They've put out some great material. Nobody can take that away. Period.

Oh dear Mogwai, how dull. You looked like idiots last time you slagged off Blur; now history will repeat itself.

Dec 12, 2008

how about Mogwai is Shite? Blur has been inventing new songs and have established themselves as something more than a britpop band with their last two offerings (13, TT).Mogwai? Rock Action and Young Team were classic. Mr. Beast and the one came out this year show they are losing the plot and i doubt they will ever regain that touch again.Feels like Mogwai is the Oasis in the post-rock genre to me.

Who are Mogwai?

rikos666

Dec 12, 2008

Hahaha! That was well funny!Taken with a pinch of salt obviously - if they are serious it's abit immature they must be about 63.I think Moqwai may have a little bit too much time on their hands!I'm actually a fan of both bands and all of the people who are calling mogwai shit have clearly never seen them live! They are fucking awesome! ladys and gents... that is a fact.

While I was never a huge fan of Blur after their first album I do think Damon Albarn is one of the most eclectic, talented people working in British music today. I've been a fan of Mogwai's since Young Team and what I find most surprising is, at least Stuart Braithwaite, still even taking up mental space thinking about Blur after they've been off the air for so many years now. But let's face it, Blur did act a bit poncey at times during their careers but I personally don't feel it merits something like this, especially in 2009. By the way, apparently people aren't familiar with the fantastic animated show on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim called 'Metalocalypse' as Stuart's comments printed here are basically a word for word repeat of the kind of stuff the sinister cabal monitoring Dethklok's progress say on the show, so I think he was trying to be funny there...

it must be pretty tough when your biggest hit is a t-shirt slogan you thought of ten years ago.

Mogwai?? From the jungle book?? Sorry..never heard of 'em

I love both bands... huge props for the Metalocalypse reference, and kudos to whooka for spotting it too. :D

Dec 13, 2008

How immature. Just because Mogwai have been going for yonks and still no-one cares doesn't mean they need to take it out on Blur.

ncarroll89

Dec 13, 2008

You may think they are 'shite', however its likely they will headline glastonbury and since your career has gone down the shitter i doubt you will be aloud within a mile of the pyramid stage.... petty twat

Beatle_Matt

Dec 13, 2008

Mogwai is calling BLUR shite!?That's like Paula Abdul calling Gene Kelly a shitty dancer.

pam_sonique

Dec 13, 2008

I LIKE MOGWAI..BUT THERE GOT NO IDEA... BLUR IS GREATER THAN ANYBODY!

shedboy82

Dec 13, 2008

I bought one of those t-shirts at T in the Park in 1999, where Blur played one of the worst headline sets I've ever seen. That T-Shirt was immature, petty and quite cheap-looking to be honest - but so, so true. Blur are indeeed shite. I still wear it sometimes. And if you haven't heard of Mogwai, go buy one of their fucking records, you fools...

albarnaholic

Dec 13, 2008

Mogway, Mogwai, Moqwai or however they're called, they're just looking for some attention! who the fucx are they? Hyde Park sold out! Blur are shite? MOGWAI ARE SHITE!

Dec 13, 2008

Okay everyone, lets all name as many Mogwai hits as we can..... Oh dear that was hard.Blur?? Too many to list.Fuck off Mogwai.

hness

Dec 13, 2008

Mogwai are just sad Sonic Youth wannabes and the singer is an ugly bald motherfucking midget....you need the publicity so i guess it's time to be a flea on the shiny coat of Blur's amazing coat! buckfast jimmies!

Mogwai are better than Blur.

brilliant_green

Dec 13, 2008

Who the fxxk is Mogwai? Listen up, you should shut up and write some good tunes, instead of insulting great band like Blur that you'll never been the height as them in the rest of your life.

Dec 13, 2008

who the fuck are mogwai?

ArcticMonkey

Dec 13, 2008

The fact that no one gave a toss about Mogwai's comments first time round makes this new round of slagging off even more pathetic! Didn't Mogwai also say that Damon Albarn would rape his gran to get a hit single? Classless morons! The fact that these ridiculous muppets have had the comments made into an NME news story is clearly their plan.....it's the only way they'll get themselves heard now as their music is totally irrelevent! Come back when you play Hyde Park eh Mogwai?

citizenidiot

Dec 13, 2008

I really don't think Stuart is being serious here people, calm down. Long live Blur & Mogwai.

colinzeal

Dec 13, 2008

Meh. These dour Scottish doom fucking merchants are only trying to get column inches. Fuck off back to your cave.

Windowlickersfriend

Dec 13, 2008

Although this may be slightly off the original point, and I certainly do not wish to start an argument and this may be better suited to the forums, but I believe the responses to this article so far, truly sum up the nature of NME readers today. Full circle statements that themselves contradict the point they are trying to make. Mogwai are as relevant as Blur, and you are only accustomed to Blur due to Blur being blur and so forth..but Ive forgotten my original point..but just take it as being very important..

this_is_a_scene

Dec 13, 2008

Well done Mogwai. Why does everyone care what they think? You're just as bad by saying they're shit...

BamaBoy

Dec 13, 2008

Obviously Mogwai are just trying to wind Blur up and have a laugh at Blur's expense. If you don't like Mogwai you should check out their album "Young Team." It is an absolute classic. I think that since Mogwai are Scottish and Blur are English it has something to do with Stuart's comments.

CrackedLCD

Dec 13, 2008

As a massive fan of both bands I can't help but be a tad disappointed that Mogwai are petty enough to dig this shite up again... As good as Mogwai are, they're just making themselves look like bitter little nobheads. If they want to have a rant about the state of music I could think of better targets then musicians of Albarn, Coxon and James' Calibre... It just makes a pretty ace band look like they're trying to grab publicity of the back of another band and sell a few shirts in the process which, in turn, makes them look a tad pathetic... disappointing to say the least

atelesjr

Dec 13, 2008

This is sad. Why Mogway doesn't care to do good music instead of waisting time to feud others' work? Please man...let's grew up! That's ridiculous!

glimmers_of_hope

Dec 13, 2008

Why is everyone so serious?Mogwai have got sense of humour, take these comments in the manner they were intended.I love Mogwai - If you don't know who they are you should check out The Hawk is Howling - Definately one of the albums of the year.I love Blur too and I can't wait for the Hyde Park gigs and fingers crossed for Glasto.Mogwai are just saying that it's shite that another big band are trying to cash in and it doesn't show much artistic integrity - Whatever you think about the music (which I LOVE) you've got to see that there is a grain of truth in that.

nsc311

Dec 13, 2008

I think the comments are pretty lame, but I'd have to say Mogwai rules and is better than Blur.

merkinman

Dec 13, 2008

This is funny. Yeah, it's a bit sad and immature, but so what? The sheep-like, conformist bleatings of "Who are Mogwai?" and "Blur have sold more records" are just the kind of thing that a free-thinking, independent band like Mogwai are having a pop at. And in a day and age when you can find out about any remotely obscure band by clicking a couple of links, how lazy must these knuckledraggers be? Blur fans: are sheep.

AbraCadaver

Dec 13, 2008

bunch of idiots, totally irrelevant and unimportant shite band

ifu05236

Dec 13, 2008

The most important question is, who the fuck are Blur??

MahadyTheLips

Dec 13, 2008

its a pity the only words coming from Mogwai hav to be slagging off a band like Blur.if they put half as much effort or the time in their sad little lives into sticking a few words into their music maybe theyd find a hint of the recognition Albarn and co hav garnered in their time in the business.u'd expect this kind of shit from a pair of ponces like the Gallaghers, but looks like not many are above that point now

rufoid

Dec 13, 2008

mon the mogwai

Slushofield

Dec 14, 2008

Sure, Mogwai are immensely superior to Blur but this is pretty immature of them to say the least.

Boris

Dec 14, 2008

Mogwai...hmm....The name rings a bell but I couldn't name anything they've ever done.Fame seeking idiocy.

MartynDavenport

Dec 14, 2008

Quite disturbing how many "music fans" on here don't even know who Mogwai are, whether you think they're any good or not, you should have at least heard of them. Makes these peoples' opinions irrelevant really... same sort of people who rant about how good a band like Blur or Oasis are, despite knowing nothing about music lol

sydbarrett5

Dec 14, 2008

For all the people who are upset by this.. please open your eyes. This is a marketing ploy that has been done over and over again. Bands promote themselves and each other by staging a rivalry. If you've asked the question "Who are Mogwai?" then the marketing ploy has worked on you.

mercuriop

Dec 14, 2008

mogwai got the point again. blur choosed the most corporate, festival to play. And they're still shite. If you do not know Mogwai fuck off with your topman-music and your skinny jeans back to hoxton! Mogwai will not headline Glasto but they headline ATP

brockie

Dec 14, 2008

Those who say 'Who the fuck are Mogwai' should stop listening to middle of the road chart stuff and go buy some proper music. Broaden your horizons! It's not about how many hits a band has - the Spice Girls had loads of hits - that doesn't make them good does it? Blur and Mogwai both have their faults but both of them deserve respect. I love both bands but these kind of spats are not worth it.

ed2005

Dec 15, 2008

Mogwai's new album is great, Blur's sixth album 13 clearly owed a debt to them (if you don't know the music of either band then go and investigate). Hope Blur will play Scotla,d hope Mogwai drop this, if Noel Gallgher can end the feud, maybe Mogwai should take note...

Christophales

Dec 16, 2008

Blur played on a different stage to Mogwai at the same time at a festival way back when, thus the t-shirts. It was a joke then, and i'm sure it still is this time around. they also brought t-shirts out like Bush: is a cunt. for all of those who don't know who Mogwai are, listen to Young Team, Come on die young and Rock Action as soon as possible

crispin_glover

Dec 17, 2008

My favorite thing about Mogwai are their vocals.

ed2005

Dec 19, 2008

Crispin - just for the record, Mogwai have used vocalistists on some tracks, including Aidan Moffat and Gruff Rhys, the latter sings in welsh on Rock Action's standout track :'Dial:Revenge'
