The UK albums chart will start counting downloads for the first time this weekend (April 9).

Until this week, while the singles chart counted downloads towards final chart placings, the LPs poll only included physical album sales.

Now paid for album downloads will be eligible for The Official UK Charts Company’s countdown.

“With a catalogue of over 80,000 albums available online through legal service providers the number of digital album downloads will certainly increase,” said Charts Director Omar Maskatiya of the change, adding that last year 1.8 million digital albums were downloaded.

According to the midweek figures, Morrissey looks set to top the first ever integrated download chart, with ‘Ringleader Of The Tormentors’ on course to be Number One.
