Morrissey has hit out at the Duchess of Cambridge over her apparent taste for foie gras.

Posting on the true-to-you fansite on his 54th birthday earlier this week, he first congratulated Prince Charles for banning foie gras – the fatty liver of a force-fed duck or goose – from all official menus.

He then moved on to Kate, and urged his fans to complain to Fortnum & Mason, the one department store in London that still sells the French delicacy. He said: "Unsurprisingly, this most savage and cruel commodity continues to be the favourite 'dish' of smiling mother-to-be Kate Muddleton (sic) (from whom, in fact, we expect no less).

"Foie gras production is illegal in the UK, yet the ever-so-correct Fortnum & Mason have found suppliers in France who will keep their shelves stocked – possibly with the hope that smiling Kate will wobble in and place an order for her unborn child.

"Since Fortnum & Mason are now the only department store in London who are associated with the pitiless atrocity of foie gras, would you please write to them/contact them and exert pressure on them to stop selling such a savage beyond belief 'product'."

It's not the first time The Smiths singer has criticised Kate Middleton. He attributed responsibility for the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha to the Duchess, saying in an interview in December: "The Duchess of Cambridge was in the hospital, as far as I could see, for absolutely no reason. She feels no shame about the death of this woman, she's saying nothing about the death of this poor woman. The arrogance of the British royals is absolutely staggering."
