A film about Morrissey's early life is currently being planned by a Manchester production company.

The unofficial biopic is being developed by the Oscar-nominated team behind the short film The Voorman Problem.

According to a statement on their website, the film will tell the story of Morrissey's early life prior to meeting Johnny Marr and forming their successful songwriting partnership and ultimately The Smiths. The film is currently under the working title Steven.

"The film covers Morrissey's life pre-Smiths and is more of a portrait than a conventional biopic," said director Mark Gill. "It's as much a film for non-Morrissey fans as it is for die-hard devotees, but I can't deny that this is a love letter to Steven Patrick Morrissey and the dark satanic mills of Manchester."

Both the film's producer, Orian Williams, and the casting director, Shaheen Baig, worked on Ian Curtis biopic Control, and the screenplay will be written by Gill and William Thacker. It has not yet been confirmed whether Morrissey has endorsed the film's creation. The company are scheduled to begin work on the film at the end of 2014 in the UK.

Meanwhile, Morrissey kicked off his North American tour last night (May 7) with a show in San Jose.
