Muse reveal they almost duetted with Elton John on 'Survival' Get Tickets
Matt Bellamy says that the eccentric popstar was previously the musical director of the Olympics
The Devon trio's new track is the official song of the 2012 Olympic Games and singer Matt Bellamy had previously said that it was firstly planned as a duet with an unnamed "good pianist".
However, in an interview with Los Angeles rock radio station KROQ, the singer has now let slip that it was actually Elton John and said that the 'Rocket Man' star was once employed as the musical director of the games before he fell out with the organisers.
Speaking about 'Survival', Bellamy said: "Believe it or not, Elton John gave us a call and wanted to write a song for the Olympics. At one time Elton John was actually the director of the music for the Olympics. He contacted us and we thought 'This is far out! We're going to do a song for the Olympics with Elton John?!'".
They continued: "So that's how the ball started rolling way back over a year ago. But then he pulled out of the Olympics. He didn't want to be involved anymore cause he fell out with the organisers so that left us with a half-baked idea. At that point we just let it go and carried on with making the album."
He went on: "And then the Olympics approached us again about the ending ceremony for us to play and that’s when we played them that song and they said they loved it and wanted to make it an official song of some kind."
Yesterday (August 1), it was revealed that Muse have delayed the release of their new album 'The 2nd Law' until October.
The album had originally been scheduled to come out on September 17, but will now be released on October 1 in the UK and on October 2 in the US. No reason has been given for the delay, but one possible explanation could be to avoid clashing with The Killers' new album 'Battle Born', which is also due for release on September 17.
The band have also confirmed that the album's first single will be 'Madness', which will be released on August 20. They have not said whether the track will be debuted online or on radio prior to that date.
'The 2nd Law' is the follow-up to 2009's 'The Resistance' and has been recorded in London. It also contains recent single 'Survival' amid a total of 13 tracks.
The Devon trio will tour the UK in October, playing five shows. The gigs begin at Glasgow's SECC on October 24, before the band move onto London's O2 Arena for two shows on October 26 and 27. They then play Birmingham LG Arena on October 30 before finishing up at Manchester Arena on November 1.
