A$AP Rocky on Nirvana: ‘They helped shape me’

Rapper says he listened to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' growing up

A$AP Rocky has said Nirvana helped shape him as an artist.

The rapper, who namechecks the grunge band on the track ‘Fashion Killa’ on his debut album proper ‘LongLiveA$AP’, says he’s been influences by a range of artists.

“Music, and not just hip-hop, has been so important in my life,” he told The Sun. “Growing up, I was aware of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and not just the usual stuff you’d expect growing up in Harlem. All that music shaped me and that’s why it plays a part on this record.”

The US rapper has recruited a long list of big name collaborators for the album, which is out on Monday (January 14) including Skrillex, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Florence Welch.

Speaking about working with Welch, he told the newspaper: “Man, no one would expect us to work together but she’s a huge hip-hop fan. That’s the whole surprise of the album — people you wouldn’t put together on paper and it works in the music.”

Rocky previously told NME that his debut album proper ‘LongLiveA$AP’ is “the best fucking record ever”.

Discussing his New Year’s resolutions with NME, he said: “Just to put out the best fucking record ever. I think I’ve done that so maybe I need another one. I like creative control. I’m passionate about shit, y’know. I like it to be just how I want it.”
