ABBA attack right-wing Danish political party for using ‘Mamma Mia’ in campaign

Benny Andersson threatens legal action over the use of their 1976 hit

ABBA have attacked a Danish political party for using ‘Mamma Mia’ at their rallies.

The band had threatened to sue the far-right Danish People’s Party for using the 1976 hit but ended legal proceedings after it was dropped from the DPP‘s campaign.

The youth wing of the organisation had changed the lyrics of the song to ‘Mamma Pia’, in honour of their leader Pia Kjaersgaard, reports BBC News.

“Firstly, you cannot just rewrite songs as you like and secondly we want them to understand that we have absolutely no interest in supporting their party,” said former singer Benny Andersson after he was contacted by a left-wing pressure group asking whether he supported the DPP‘s policies.

ABBA never allows its music to be used in a political context,” he added. “This is something that we have pointed out to the Danish People’s Party.”
