Singer joined host Matthew McConaughey on US comedy show last night (November 21)
Adele appeared on Saturday Night Live last night. Scroll down to watch her performance of new single ‘Hello’.
Adele appeared on the long-running US series alongside guest host Matthew McConaughey, in the same week she releases new album ’25’. The album is on course to rival the biggest one-week album sales in UK chart history with ’25’ selling 300,000 copies in its first 24 hours on sale.
The album was released on Friday (November 20) via independent label XL Recordings. Official Charts Company data shows that as of midnight last night the album has registered 300,000 sales. These figures do not include streaming data as Adele has withheld the album from all streaming services.
Just two albums have sold more than half a million copies in the space of a week – Take That’s ‘Progress’ in 2010, and Oasis’s ‘Be Here Now’ which sold 695,761 after going on sale in August 1997. Adele’s second album ’21’ sold 208,000 copies in its first week in January 2011.
Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot said: “Adele truly is a once in a generation artist. Her appeal spans age groups and genres, from children to teenagers, right through to mums and dads, uncles and aunties.
“With this mammoth first day sales tally, Adele has taken a further step towards greatness. Over the next few days we will find out whether it can pass the magic half a million sales mark.”
’25’ features the single ‘Hello’ as well as ‘When We Were Young’. In a message posted online on the release day, Adele said she was “grateful to be able to even put another record out” and added the promoting the album around the world in recent weeks has “literally taken my breath away.”
