'21' is now the UK's sixth biggest seller of all time

Adele has overtaken Dire Straits in the UK’s all-time biggest selling albums list.

According to the Official Charts Company, the singer’s stupendously successful second album ’21’ has now passed Mark Knopfler and co’s ‘Brothers In Arms’ to become the sixth biggest selling album of all time in the UK.

’21’ only passed the total sales of Pink Floyd‘s ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ on Monday (March 19) and was then only 12,000 sales behind ‘Brothers In Arms’, a figure it has since passed. ’21’ has now sold 4.15 millions copies in the UK, meaning the equivalent of one in six of the country’s households now own a copy the album.

The top 5 biggest selling albums of all-time have remained the same for some time as no artist has come close to challenging, until now. Queen‘s ‘Greatest Hits’ is Number One, with sales of 5.83million, and ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ by The Beatles fills the Number Two slot with 5.04million.

Abba’s ‘Gold’ is Number Three, ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis is in fourth and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ sits in fifth place.

Adele recently stated that she will be heading into the studio to begin work on the follow-up to ’21’ in the coming weeks.
