Boy George urges Adele to give up smoking

Culture Club man says ditching the fags was 'the best thing he ever did'

Boy George has urged Adele to give up smoking in order to prolong her singing career.

Adele was forced to cancel all her remaining live dates this year in order to have the surgery on her vocal cords. She called off 10 dates that she was due to perform in North America and six UK dates.

She has since undergone vocal cord microsurgery to stop recurrent bleeding from a benign polyp in her throat, a condition that is usually the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord. The operation has been described as a complete success and Adele is expected to make a full recovery.

The ’21’ singer has previously spoken about how much she enjoyed smoking and had even gone as far as saying she’d sooner give up singing then stop smoking. But Boy George has counselled Adele to nix the habit.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Boy George has said that “it isn’t a great idea” for a singer to smoke and has described his own decision to give up as “the best thing I ever did”.

He said: “If you’re a singer and you smoke it really isn’t a great idea. I gave up smoking six months ago which was the best thing I ever did. I used to try to convince myself it made me sound jazzier. It was very difficult to give up but I’m so glad I did.”

Adele releases a live DVD ‘Live At The Royal Albert Hall’ today (November 28).
