Alt-J top NME.COM Mercury Music Prize poll

'An Awesome Wave' is also bookies' favourite to win this year's prize

Alt-J have emerged as NME.com users’ favourite to win the Mercury Music Prize, which will be announced this evening (November 1).

The band, who are currently bookies’ favourites to win for their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’, polled 29 per cent of the NME.com poll placing them narrowly ahead of The Maccabees with their album ‘Given To The Wild’, which scored 26 per cent of the vote.

Django Django came in a narrow third place with 6.59 per cent of the vote, squeezing ahead of Sheffield troubadour Richard Hawley with 6.39 per cent and singer-songwriter Ben Howard with 6.29 per cent. Jessie Ware came in sixth place with just over 5 per cent of the share of votes, followed by Plan B, whose third album ‘Ill Manors’ got 3.69 per cent.

As many as 10 per cent of those polled clicked the option for “Literally couldn’t give a shit”.

The winner of this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize will be announced at 10pm this evening. The big reveal will also be broadcast live on C4. You can check out the full list of nominated albums, and final bookies odds, below.
