AlunaGeorge, Tom Odell and Laura Mvula compete for 2013 Brits Critics’ Choice Award

Previous winners of the prestigious prize include Florence and the Machine and Adele

The shortlist for the 2013 Brits Critics’ Choice Award has been unveiled.

Off-kilter pop duo Alunageorge will compete against singer-songwriter Tom Odell and soul singer Laura Mvula for the prestigious prize, now in its sixth year. The winner will be announced on December 20 (2012).

Reacting to their nomination, Alunageorge said in a statement: “We both feel incredibly honoured to be shortlisted for this award. Completely blown away, it’s a great feeling to have our music recognised in such a big way. 2013 is going to be an incredible year for UK music.”

Meanwhile, Odell said he felt “thrilled” and “privileged”, while Mvula admitted: “I’m in total shock.”

The nominees were chosen by panel of music industry experts from magazines, newspapers, radio stations and music TV channels. Any act with a record deal whose debut album is set for release in 2013 was deemed eligible – with over 100 artists being considered for this year’s prize.

Last year’s Critics’ Choice Award was won by Emeli Sandé, whose debut album ‘Our Version Of Events’ has gone on to become the UK’s best-seller of the year to date. Previous prizes were handed to Jessie J (2011), Ellie Goulding (2010), Florence And The Machine (2009) and Adele (2008).
