Adele and Lady Gaga expected to join crooner onstage

Tony Bennett will pay tribute to Amy Winehouse at this Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards (August 28).

The legendary crooner, known for standards such as ‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco’, teamed up with Winehouse on ‘Body And Soul’ for his forthcoming duets album.

The performance, which will take place in Los Angeles this weekend, will be preceded by video footage from the pair’s March recording session, while it’s expected Adele and Lady Gaga, who both paid respects to Winehouse following her untimely death, will join Bennett on stage. Both are already scheduled to perform at the VMAs.

Bennett said the song, which will be a released as a single on September 14, Winehouse’s birthday, is a fitting homage to her musical gifts. He said:

It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul’ it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known.

Proceeds from the track will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, although as reported by NME, the setting up of the charity has been delayed due to the name being registered by a third party.

Of Bennett’s planned tribute at the MTV Awards, Winehouse’s father Mitch said: “Our family is honored that the VMA’s are giving Amy this wonderful tribute. We know that Amy’s performance of ‘Rehab’ at the MTV Movie Awards played an important part in Amy’s worldwide success.”

It’s thought there are as many as twelve unreleased Amy Winehouse songs, recorded before her death on July 23. They have been described by Universal Music head Lucian Grainge as “sensational”.
