Amy Winehouse album and single sales soar as Adele stays at Number One

Huge sales increases for 'Back To Black' and 'Frank' following 27-year-old's death yesterday (July 23)

Amy Winehouse‘s album and single sales rocketed in the hours following her death yesterday (July 23), the Official Charts Company has announced.

The late singer’s album sales increased 37 times over following the tragic news, while her singles sales were up 23 times over. As a result, ‘Back To Black’ climbed to Number 59 in the albums chart, while its title track rose to Number 81 in the singles chart.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot commented:

We would expect an even bigger impact to roll through over the coming days. Such a demonstration of her popularity is the best tribute the British public can pay to this extraordinary British talent.

Elsewhere, Adele chalked up her 18th week at Number One with ’21’, while LMFAO scored the highest new entry at Number 8 with ‘Sorry For The Party Rocking’. Further down the chart, new Kylie Minogue collection ‘The Albums 2000-2010’ debuted at Number 37.

In the singles chart, boyband The Wanted‘s ‘Glad You Came’ held on for a second week, while there were no new entries in the Top 20.

Rizzle Kicks‘Down With The Trumpet’ (Number 22), Tinie Tempah‘s ‘Till I’m Gone’ (Number 35) and Chase & Status‘Hitz’ (Number 39) were new entries further down the chart.
