‘2X202-ST5’ follows ‘CIRKLON3’, which came out earlier this month, accompanied by Aphex Twin’s first music video in 17 years. The clip was directed by Dublin 12-year-old schoolboy Ryan Wyer.

Richard D James chose him after being impressed by videos on Wyer’s YouTube channel, Epic Gaming. These include his own videos of Aphex’s songs ‘Spectogram’ and ‘Run The Place Red’ as well as a two-minute film of a boy supposedly hypnotised by Satan.

The seven-song EP has four mixes of the title track, two of ‘CIRKLON’ and ‘2X202-ST5’.

It’s the third release of new music by Richard D James as Aphex Twin since the Mercury Prize-nominated ‘Syro’ album of 2014. In 2015, he released the single ‘Marchromt30a Edit 2B 96’ as well as the EP ‘Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt 2’.

Having waited 13 years since 2001’s ‘Druxqs’ album to release ‘Syro’, James explained that he is finding it easier to release new Aphex Twin music. He added: “Releasing music gets harder and harder. Every time I go to compile it, I give up after a few hours because it’s just so much stuff and then I get lost. But I’m now in this mode where I’m listening and compiling a lot. I think I’ll be putting out a lot of stuff, hopefully.”
