ARAB STRAP GOING UNDERGROUND (AGAIN)

The glum Scots re-sign to their first label after parting company with Go!Beat/Polydor...

Arab Strap have returned to CHEMIKAL UNDERGROUND, the label that released their first material.

The Scottish miserablists signed the deal in Glasgow’s Tennent’s Brewery, and described it as feeling like they were “returning home”. Chemikal Underground released Arab Strap‘s critically acclaimed debut EP ‘The First Big Weekend’ and subsequent album ‘The Week Never Starts Round Here’ in 1996.

The band had parted company with Go!Beat/Polydor in February, and were understood to be unhappy with the way ‘Elephant Shoe’, their third album, but first for the label, had been promoted.

A spokesperson for Chemikal Underground told nme.com: “We’re happy to have them back. We have always kept in touch right through their time with Go!Beat. We helped them out a bit earlier this year when they had a spot of bother with lawyers and accountants in London. Now they have lawyers and accountants in Glasgow.”

Explaining the choice of venue for the signing of contracts, he said they had simply wanted to “organise a piss-up in a brewery”.

The band, who premiered a new track ‘Blackness’ at the recent All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at Camber Sands, will return to the studio next week. They hope to release new material by the end of the year.
