Arctic Monkeys have expressed their disappointment at being denied the chance to play after Rihanna at this year’s V Festival.

The band were talking to NME.COM in an exclusive video interview which you can watch by clicking above. They also appear on the cover of this week’s NME magazine, available across the UK today (June 8).

Alex Turner explained that the band had never even been to the festival before, admitting: “that’s probably why as well, we were like, ‘let’s try something else’.”

But he also revealed that part of the attraction of headlining V was the chance to share a bill with the ‘Man Down’ singer, something that the day-split turned out not to allow. Instead she will play on the alternate day, alongside Eminem.

He said: “And we were under the impression that we were playing after Rihanna. That were a draw. They duped us.”

Matt Helders then joked: “They used her as bait.”

The drummer went on to underline how seriously the band take the acts they share stages with, always making a point of choosing their support bands personally.

He said: “It’s always something we pick and think about wherever we go really. There’s only been a couple of times where we haven’t been able to pick or it hasn’t worked out. But that’s just because someone drops out and we end up with a stinker.”

This weekend (June 10-11) at their homecoming shows at Sheffield Don Valley Stadium, they will be supported across the two nights by Miles Kane, The Vaccines, Anna Calvi, and local Sheffield bands Dead Sons and Mabel Love.
