Sheffield band named Headliner of the Year at annual ceremony
Arctic Monkeys were named headliner of the year at last night’s European Festival Awards (January 15).
The awards took place at Groningen’s De Oosterport in Holland, marking the opening night of Eurosonic Noorderslag. Alongside Arctic Monkeys, Daft Punk picked up the prize for Best Festival Anthem for ‘Get Lucky’ while Imagine Dragons were named Newcomer of the Year.
German festivals proved most successful on the night, picking up five awards in total. Best Indoor Festival was given to Metal Hammer Paradise, Berlin Festival won Best Line Up, Melt! Festival got Best Medium-Sized Festival while Promoter of the Year was given to FKP Scorpio and the Lifetime achievement Award to Marek Lieberberg, founder of the twin Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festival.
Elsewhere, Best Major Festival Award prize was given to Serbia’s EXIT Festival, B.my.Lake in Hungary took the Best New Festival title and FUSION Festival in Romania won the Best Small Festival Award. Holland’s Lowlands was also named Artists’ Favourite Festival.
Arctic Monkeys also lead the nominations for the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas, with a total of eight nominations split between the band and singer Alex Turner, including Best Album, Best Live Band and Best British Band.
