Despite Mars Volta split, At The Drive-In may have a future, says Omar

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez opens up about his relationship with bandmate Cedric Bixler-Zavala

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has said that At The Drive-In are not over and that there are always possibilities where the band are involved.

The hardcore band reunited for a string of shows, including appearances at Reading and Leeds Festivals, in 2012 and reissued both their ‘Relationship Of Command’ and ‘Acrobatic Tenement’ albums. Speaking to Rolling Stone, frontman Rodriguez-Lopez was asked if the band was still active, to which he said: “We don’t talk about it that way. It’s there; we have possibilities. Everybody’s doing something right now. Cedric has a record coming out, Tony and Jim in Sparta are doing stuff. We’re just trying to feel again when the moment opens up where nothing is forced and nothing is an obligation.”

However, relations between Rodriguez-Lopez and his bandmate Cedric Bixler-Zavala were revealed to be strained earlier in 2013 when the latter disbanded The Mars Volta in protest at the frontman starting a new band, Bosnian Rainbows. Discussing the split, the frontman appeared to harbour no ill feeling however. “The band ended, but there’s still lots of music. Cedric has an incredible record coming out. We can look back on all the cool stuff we did together. It’s like At the Drive-In, with that realisation that when you’re working with someone, you’re at your absolute best. With The Mars Volta, I know for a fact now that the best stuff I did was because of what Cedric wrote. That’s what made it classic and memorable.”

Cedric Bixler-Zavala has subsequently confirmed that he is working on a solo album following the end of The Mars Volta.
