Rapper embroiled in new Twitter argument with US gossip blogger
Azealia Banks has defended using a homophobic slur once again after becoming embroiled in a new Twitter spat with US celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
The pair first exchanged cross words on the social networking site last month (January 6), after the rapper called Hilton a “messy faggot” and subsequently insisted that her insult had not been homophobic. “A faggot is not a homosexual male,” she claimed. “A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.”
A fresh row between Banks and Hilton occured on Twitter yesterday (February 15), after Banks was angered that her cover of Baauer’s track ‘Harlem Shake’ was removed from SoundCloud. Banks sent him a Tweet asking: “Why you cockblockin tho??? Lmaoooo,” and then, when he responded that it wasn’t her track, she replied: “You’re a pussy. You don’t belong in hip-hop.”
Hilton then intervened in the row, writing: “Classy as always! How does it feel to be better known for all your trash-talking than your music, Azealia?” The pair then quickly became involved in a new argument, which you can read below.
Banks then defended her use of the insult in a series of messages. “Here we go again. Everyone pretending to be so shocked and moved by the word faggot,” she wrote. “It’s like society is so bored with itself it needs to hold on to these outdated rules of what you can say and cannot say.”
“Why has society accepted “nigger” As a colloquialism … But will not accept “faggot”,” she added. “Everyones always acting like its fucking 1905 in this bitch.” She later went on to claim that she had used the word to suggest that Hilton was a “coward, liar, backstabber… energy stealer, blood sucker”.
Banks reportedly enjoyed a sales surge following her last spat with Hilton, which started after her row with fellow rapper Angel Haze. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation group (GLAAD), however, subseqeuntly criticised her for the language she had used to abuse Hilton.
