US President jokes about the rapper's recent trip to Cuba and Taylor Swift at White House dinner
Barack Obama joked about Jay-Z and Taylor Swift during his speech at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner last night (April 27). You can watch the speech above.
The US President referenced the rapper’s recent controversial trip to Cuba and poked fun at Taylor Swift’s history of writing songs about her own broken relationships at the event in Washington DC, which was hosted by US chat show host Conan O’Brien.
Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce created a small scandal in the US last month after travelling to Cuba. The US has a 51-year embargo making it illegal for US citizens to travel to Cuba solely for tourism. However, it was subsequently revealed that the couple had permission from the government to enter the country for their holiday, with some critics believing Obama personally sanctioned the trip.
Speaking about the incident, US President Obama said: “Some things are beyond my control. For example, this whole controversy about Jay-Z going to Cuba – it’s unbelievable. I’ve got 99 problems and now Jay-Z is one.”
Elsewhere in his speech, while taking aim at the Republican party, Obama used Taylor Swift as an example to get his point across. “We need to make progress on some important issues. Take the sequester. Republicans fell in love with this thing, and now they can’t stop talking about how much they hate it. It’s like we’re trapped in a Taylor Swift album,” he joked.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg took part in a spoof “behind-the-scenes” movie trailer for a film titled Obama. The skit also features the US President, who pretends to be Daniel Day-Lewis. You can watch it by clicking on ‘play’ below.
