The R'n'B stars were closely followed by Eminem in 2014
Beyonce’s ‘Drunk In Love’ was the most searched for song last year, while Drake was the most searched for artist. Both were followed closely by Eminem. The Detroit rapper was the second most popular artist on the site and ‘Rap God’ was the second most searched for song.
Brooklyn-based Rap Genius was founded in 2009 by Mahbod Moghadam, Ilan Zechory and Tom Lehman, and received $15m of investment in 2012 from Andressen Horowitz, the venture capital firm famous for supporting successful startups including Facebook, Twitter, Groupon and Airbnb. The site’s founders have now moved into rock and pop lyrics, history and movies, with Lehman saying he wanted the site “to add context to all important texts in people’s lives”.
Last year Moghadam resigned from the music annotation site, following his controversial commentary of the manifesto written by serial killer Elliot Rodger.
