Animal rights campaign group criticise singer for wearing python skin, pannelled iguana and leather
Beyonce has been criticised by animal rights charity PETA for her choice of outfit at this year’s Super Bowl.
The singer wore a black bodysuit during her 13-minute performance during the half-time period in the game between Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night (February 3). The outfit was made by designer Rubin Singer and is believed to have been crafted from python skin, pannelled iguana and leather.
This has angered People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has slammed the costume choice and told the New York Daily News: “We would take a bet that if Beyoncé watched our video exposes, she’d probably not want to be seen again in anything made of snakes, lizards, rabbits or other animals who died painfully. Today’s fashions are trending toward humane vegan options, and Beyoncé’s Super Bowl outfit missed the mark on that score.”
Beyoncé has yet to respond to PETAs complaint.
Meanwhile, viewing figures have revealed that Beyoncé’s appearance helped boost the Super Bowl to ratings of 104m, making the broadcast the third highest rated TV show of all time in America. Nielsen estimates 108.41 million viewers tuned in for Super Bowl XLVII, placing it behind Super Bowl XLVI and Super Bowl XLV in the historical rankings. Beyoncé’s audience figures did trail the numbers Madonna’s performance at last year’s Super Bowl brought in, however. The 2012 half-time show, which saw Madonna joined by MIA and Nicki Minaj, attracted 112.5 million viewers. In 2009, 95.7 million tuned in to watch Bruce Springsteen.
The Super Bowl performance has also seen Beyoncé’s digital album sales soar 230 per cent, Billboard reports, with Destiny’s Child also receiving a huge album sales boost of 600 per cent.
