Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil: ‘Record labels need to get their egos in check’ – NME’s 10 covers special

'They've been so cocky and arrogant about money,' Neil says of labels

Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil has said he believes record companies need to let bands have more power in order for the music industry to grow.

Speaking to NME as one of our 10 cover stars in a special issue of the magazine out this week (April 7), Neil said he doesn’t agree that the music world is in decline at present, but that labels need to change in order for the industry to thrive.

“They [record labels] need to get their egos in check. The days of record companies being the lords of what bands do is gone. The power is slowly coming back to bands,” Neil explained, adding: “They’ve been so cocky and arrogant about money. They say ‘the music industry is dying’. It’s not. They just think it is because they can’t take bonuses as big as they used to.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Neil gives his opinion on which bands he thinks have sold out in recent times, and how things in the music industry have changed for Biffy Clyro since they started in 1995.

The special covers have been put together to mark the launch of the new NME. The magazine has been completely revamped with new front, features and reviews sections, plus an update for NME‘s iconic logo.
