Biffy Clyro call new album ‘very danceable’

The band are currently working on follow up to 2013 album 'Opposites'

Biffy Clyro have said that their next album is set to be “very danceable”.

The band – who headlined Isle of Wight Festival over the weekend have explained that they have been “shaking up” the way they write for the follow-up to last year’s ‘Opposites’. “It’s early days, but a couple of new songs we’re recording are sounding very danceable,” said drummer Ben Johnston to The Daily Star. “We’re thinking of shaking up the way we write – all of us coming up with ideas on our computers and swapping them around. It’ll be the first time we’ve really used computers to write.”

He added that some of the record also has a ‘black metal’ sound: “While I’m sure we’ll create a few more big rock songs, it’ll be good to see what new sounds we conjure up too,” he said. “We think of our albums as two different trilogies, and ‘Opposites’ was number six. It’s time to start afresh, and some songs we’ve worked on are very different. Some songs are dark – they sound like black metal.”

The band have been working on the follow-up to last year’s double album ‘Opposites’ in the Ayrshire farmhouse which they have used for the past decade. However, in an interview with Kerrang they recently have revealed that the farmhouse currently has a ‘plumbing problem’.

“We’ve got a plumbing problem,” said frontman Simon Neil. “There has been raw sewage leaking through a wall. Its gone from being just gross to actually kinda dangerous… maybe the new album will be raw sewage influenced. It might end up sounding like Municipal Waste!”

Speaking further about their next album, Neil confirmed it would be “less orchestral” than ‘Opposites’. “It’s time for us to move on and do something new,” he said. “In a way ‘Opposites’ has shown us what not to do for the next record. It certainly won’t be as expansive or long. It’s liberating to know that we couldn’t have made a more epic record than the one we just did, but we don’t want to repeat that again.”

Neil discussed the new songs he has been writing earlier this year with NME, saying he has been experimenting with beatboxing, black metal and “stoner-reggae”. “I’ve written about 14 songs,” said Neil. “I’m really fucking excited about it at the moment. I don’t want people to think the whole album sounds like this, but I’ve written my first ever beatbox song, and I’ve written a black metal pop song which I can’t wait for people to hear. There’s also some cool stoner reggae shit going on, believe it or not. It’s really exciting.”
