Biffy Clyro: ‘Why aren’t we being considered for the role of Pope?’

'And why isn't the Pope headlining Reading And Leeds?' says the Scottish trio

While John Lennon once claimed The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, Biffy Clyro are asking why they “aren’t being considered for the role of Pope”.

The Scottish trio made the jokey comment during a Twitter Q&A earlier this evening (March 13). Fans were asked to tweet the band using #Askbiffy, and it wasn’t long before the hashtag was trending above the Pope in the UK.

This prompted Jonjo Brannen to ask the trio their thoughts on being more popular than the Pope on Twitter in Britain. They replied:

Biffy Clyro, who released their UK Number One double album ‘Opposites’ last month (February), will headline this year’s Reading And Leeds Festivals. The Scottish rock trio will top the bill at Leeds on Friday, August 23 and Reading on Sunday, August 25. Eminem and Green Day are the other two Main Stage headliners.

Speaking about their first ever Reading and Leeds top billing, Biffy frontman Simon Neil recently told NME: “Reading always felt like such an exotic festival. Even though it’s been around since the ’70s, it just really seemed to come alive in the ’90s. I think that’s when it became the cultural moment that it is now, and the fixture that it is in the calendar…It’s just fucking bizarre. I still can’t get my head round it.”
