Incident took place at Brentwood Festival on July 16

Festival-goers reportedly left a Bob Geldof performance early after the Boomtown Rats frontman insulted the crowd for wearing too much Primark clothing.

Geldof and band were headlining Brentwood Festival in Essex earlier this month (July 16). Other acts performing included Tony Hadley, ABC, Level 42 and Soul II Soul.

During the Boomtown Rats’ Saturday evening set, Geldof reportedly stopped after one song and yelled to the crowd: “We don’t do Abba. We don’t do Robbie fucking Williams… Brentwood, we are the Boomtown Rats.”

He went on to remark on his and his band’s clothing choices: “We are mega. And you are Brentwood. How do we know that you are Brentwood and we are mega? Because I am wearing a fuck off pretend snakeskin suit and [my bandmates] are wearing fuck off cowboy shirts even though they live in London.”

He continued: “On the other hand Brentwood, you are wearing wall to wall fucking Primark. This is a rock and roll festival. When you come to a rock and roll festival you dress for a rock and roll festival. You can never be too careful.”

With the crowd clearly disgruntled, Geldof went on to say: “That song we just did was written at the end of 1975 when Margaret Thatcher became leader of the opposition. What are you booing for? We’re in fucking Brexit land here guys. Yeah, we’re Irish, we’re still in Europe.”

“It’s just as well we wrote that song because this year is about Theresa May. She’s gonna do you in. There’s always someone looking at you Brentwood.”

The Essex Chronicle reported that many left before the band’s biggest hit ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’. During the performance of that song, Geldof also reportedly paused and stayed silent for 90 seconds.

Geldof recently made headlines for a Thames face-off against Nigel Farage ahead of the EU Referendum.
