Bon Iver’s new album is an ‘extension’ of ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’

Singer Justin Vernon also praises Kanye West's 'positivity'

Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon has revealed that the band’s forthcoming self-titled new album is an “extension” of their debut record.

The singer told Billboard.com that the record, which is due to be released on June 20, follows on lyrically from where ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ left off.

Vernon famously made the group’s 2008 debut in a secluded log cabin in Wisconsin using antiquated recording equipment.

Speaking about the new album, he commented: “Lyrically, it’s an extension of ‘For Emma…’. It’s like, what happens when you leave that place? You don’t necessarily arrive somewhere new right away.”

The frontman said he’s already thinking about his next musical project, commenting: “I’ve got ideas for gospel records, for another Volcano Choir [his side project] record. I could probably make a punk record at some point – if it comes naturally. I’ve got a tonne of ideas.”

Vernon also spoke about his friendship with Kanye West, who he collaborated with on the rapper’s last album ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’.

The pair also appeared onstage together at Coachella last month.

“We keep up and make sure we’re still alive, or whatever. It was exciting to be around West [at Coachella],” he remarked.

“It felt positive – and so much negativity sort of trails that dude around. He was in such bright spirits, and to see it go down the way it did, so successfully, was really good.

Meanwhile, Bon Iver are also scheduled to play a six-date UK tour this autumn.
