Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon says Beyoncé doing Pepsi-sponsored tours angers him

The musician says modern pop stars "have to believe in something"

Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon has said pop stars like Beyonce doing sponsored tours and working with huge brands angers him.

The musician, who releases his third album ’22, A Million’ on September 30, has spoken about the responsibilities of modern pop stars in a new interview.

Speaking to the Guardian, he said: “You have to believe in something. Like, I’d prefer Beyoncé didn’t do a Pepsi tour. Do not take two million dollars from Pepsi and be a role model for young girls. Do not do that.”

He continued: “That stuff does anger me. And I feel like I am not afraid to talk about that stuff.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he also revealed it was Kanye West who reminded him of the importance of looking after yourself. “Kanye speaks of how you have to love yourself. And believe in yourself,” he explained. “I heard him say something recently: ‘I love myself so other people can love themselves.’

“So they get up in the morning and put on a song and be like ‘FUCK YEAH’. And that is what it’s for.”
