Cat Power to play benefit gig for Ferguson protestors

Protests have followed the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown

Cat Power will play a free benefit concert for the protestors in Ferguson, Missouri following the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

Consequence of Sound reports that the gig will take place later today (August 24th) at Firebird, a rock music venue in St Louis.

“All proceeds will go to help protestors get out of jail & any needed supplies & food for protestors & flowers for rifles,” wrote Cat Power – real name Chan Marshall – in an Instagram post.

Marshall also invited Sky Ferriera to perform at the gig but the “One” singer is scheduled to perform another show. “I’m trying to find a way to come but I’m contractually obligated to another show,” wrote Ferriera on Instagram. “I will be there in spirit.”

Cat Power is just the latest musician to pledge her support to the people of Ferguson. On Tuesday (August 19), Billy Bragg performed an impromptu show in the city.

“A number of people said to me on Twitter, if you’re going to go to St Lou, are you going to go to Ferguson? But we didn’t want to just go there and walk through Ferguson and be tourists. We wanted to do something for the community,” said Bragg.

The shooting of 18-year-old Brown occurred on August 9. His death sparked mass vigils across the US to protest police brutality and racial profiling. Lauryn Hill, Killer Mike and J Cole are among the other artists to respond to the unrest.
